Our Philosophy of Face Building
Face building refers to the concept of restoring and rebuilding the appearance of the face to counteract the effects of sun damage, scarring, facial asymmetry, and natural aging. The process varies from patient to patient based on factors that include: personal desires, goals, age, natural facial structure, asymmetry, or the degree of change discussed during the consultation.
Step One: Customized Skin Care Consultation
A thorough initial evaluation of the complexion and skin health is essential for attaining successful results. At The Skin Institute of New Orleans, maintaining healthy skin with individually tailored skin care regimens is our number one priority. Dr. Richard Sherman and his staff of Skin Savvy aestheticians offer in-depth skin care consultations and can create a personalized skin care program for each patient. These skin care regimens can compliment your lifestyle, and Dr. Sherman has hand-picked and created a variety of skin care products for men and women interested in obtaining – and maintaining – a better complexion. As your skin noticeably changes and improves, your personalized skin care regime may also evolve. Supplemental skin care treatments, such as peels, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, facials, laser treatments, collagen stimulation, dermal fillers, and neurotoxin injectables (such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®) can then be added as needed.
Step Two: Restoring Lost Facial Volume
As with any rebuilding project, the foundation is of the utmost importance. Injectables such as Sculptra® Aesthetic (Poly-L-Lactic Acid) can stimulate collagen production and allow Dr. Sherman to add volume to areas of the face that have become thin, sagging, sunken, or hollowed. This type of facial aging typically results from depleted collagen and elastic tissue, loss or redistribution of fatty tissue, increased skin laxity, diminished tone of facial muscles, dental problems, or even bone loss and resorption. All of these factors can influence the changes we see that take place gradually over years, in the mirror and in photographs.
The goal of volumizing injectables is to restore this foundation for a firmer, fuller, younger appearance. By lifting, tightening, and restoring lost volume to the face, Dr. Sherman can maintain your youthful facial contours while avoiding an “overdone” look. As a collagen booster, Sculptra® Aesthetic, allows Dr. Sherman to rebuild the deeper components of the skin while maintaining natural facial contours to achieve what has been nicknamed the “liquid face lift.” A liquid facelift is a nonsurgical method of facial rejuvenation designed to reverse the effects of the natural aging process with results that both look and feel natural.
Step Three: Wrinkle Reduction & Finishing Touches
Once the foundation or support of the face is restored, secondary facial concerns may be addressed. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm® or Restylane® (hyaluronic acid-based gels) can help further refine the appearance of facial contours, correct areas of minor asymmetry, reduce fine lines located in the more superficial layers of the skin, or diminish the prominence of scars. These hyaluronic acid-based fillers (HAs) can improve the softness and smoothness of the skin as the ingredients are hydrophilic and naturally absorb water to keep the skin well hydrated. Newer HAs add features of flexibility and support for active anatomic areas such as the perioral region (area around the mouth) to achieve supple results. The purpose is to look natural, not like a “still life.”
While Sculptra® Aesthetic and hyaluronic acid-based fillers are used for the lower face, addressing the upper third of the face (forehead creases, lines between brows, crows feet, etc.) also is paramount for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Treatment with neurotoxins such as Dysport® or Botox® Cosmetic allow for deep wrinkle and fine line reduction in these key areas.
The perioral region and the lips are often a focus of facial rejuvenation. Especially for women, these areas typically show significant signs of natural aging as fine vertical lines develop above the mouth and the lips begin to thin. Due to the delicate nature of these areas, special formulas of hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane® Silk or Juvederm® Volbella, are used to achieve results that look – and feel – soft and natural. Addressing this area of the face often serves as the finishing touch of the face building process, providing total facial rejuvenation for a more beautiful and youthful appearance.
Face building is a method of reversing many of the effects of the natural aging process. With Dr. Sherman’s technical skill and artistic eye, he can give you a vibrant complexion with fuller, firmer, and smoother looking skin. By combining a custom-tailored skin care regimen with carefully selected procedures and injectables, you can achieve an age appropriate best for your face and personality.
